AI (Japanese for “Love”) Sushi and Steak is one of the newer restaurants to open at the 29th Street Mall. The Japanese steak house is located at the corner of 29th Street and Canyon .

The restaurant is beautifully decorated with 2 distinct areas for sit down dining and dining at the hibachi tables. What really stands out is the size of this restaurant and the menu. While they have all the traditional items you would expect from a Japanese Steak House, they also have a very impressive sushi menu with many specialties. If you visit, you must try the 29th Street Roll and the Bonzai Roll. Both are fantastic! They also have great entree specialties including the bone in ribeye with roasted garlic for $26 and chilean sea bass with butter fried rice for $22.

The food from the hibachi table was also good! For $26 I ordered the tenderloin which was cooked to perfection. My husband and I visited a hibachi restaurant a few weeks earlier and they overcooked my meat. What a waste of tenderloin! This chef got my medium rare just right. My husband ordered the Love Choice which included steak, shrimp and scallops for $31. It was just as tasty. Other items on the menu included the chicken for $20, salmon for $21 and sirloin steak for $23.

The service is one area where this restaurant is lacking. Having visited several times, we have often passed on going here because of the time it takes to get your food…especially if you order at the hibachi table.

Another complaint I have was with dessert. I was so excited they had banana tempura on their menu which is one of my favorites. But when it come you could tell it was not freshly prepared, both the banana and tempura were cold.

Other than that, I really enjoyed my visit to AI and I hope it sticks around for a long time at the 29th Street Mall.
